Traders in Eldoret, have hailed Uasin Gishu county government following the recent renovation of the Eldoret wholesale market.

Following the market renovations, the traders now say that there has been a steady rise in the number of customers visiting the wholesale market attributing this to improved security and accessibility.

“The state of the market has greatly improved making it attractive to customers even during this rainy season when accessibility used to be a challenge.” Said trader representative, Susan Wangui. Her counterparts, Mary Akoth Songa, and Jane Mbone shared in her sentiments.

The business community cited the installation of CCTV cameras, availability of clean water, appropriate roofing and cementing of the market floor as key improvements that are giving them a reason to look forward to better days in the trading arena in Eldoret.

Eldoret traders are now urging the County Government to allow them to operate on a 24-hour basis once the country’s economy is fully reopened after Covid-19 interruptions.

Uasin Gishu County Executive Committee Member for ICT, Trade and Industrialization, Dr Emily Kogos, has said that the county government has embarked on the improvement of business premises and so far, the construction of more than 21 markets across the County have been completed.

Dr Kogos added that the county government is keen on improving the economy of its residents urging food producers and traders to embrace value addition to secure better prices for their produce.

Uasin Gishu County is the leading County in Kenya in the production of maize and wheat ultimately carrying the crown of being Kenya’s breadbasket. Even though the county is climatically endowed, it imports most of its vegetable and fruits. Additionally, pressure exerted on land, the main factor of production, from growing population is affecting its productivity level.
